When a signing participant receives their email from the SmartMLS Sign platform and opens the document, they will see several buttons in the upper right, one of which is Decline:
The participant can click this button if, for whatever reason, they do not want to participate in the signing. There is also a chance that they click Decline by accident (perhaps they meant to click one of the other buttons, or they simply do not understand what the button actually does).
Regardless of their reason for clicking Decline, there is a safety net in place: a confirmation window immediately pops up after the button is clicked and the user is provided a field to explain why they clicked it:
Note: the Reason field is required. The signer cannot proceed without typing something in the field. If they click Confirm without entering anything in the Reason field, the field becomes highlighted in red and they are prompted to type something. At this point, they can either click Cancel to return to the document and continue with the signing or enter something in the Reason field and click Confirm.
If they enter a reason and click Confirm, the document closes and they will see this screen:
They will also receive an eSigning Declined email confirming that they declined the signing:
The signing initiator will also receive an email notification that one of the participants has declined the signing:
If the participant changes their mind and would like to continue with the signing, they can just click the Open Document(s) button in their eSigning Declined email to re-access the document and perform their assigned tasks.
